Home Field Advantage

As the Philadelphia Phillies march on to yet another playoff run and World Series, I had the privilege and dismay of being away for the entire NLCS. I was in the islands in 90 degree, sunny, clear blue waters taking a well deserved vacation, at least which is the story I am sticking too.

While being away, the Phillies seamlessly marched on to their second World Series title in as many years and made playing baseball against west coast teams look easy!

After finishing my 2nd or 3rd Miami Vice (a drink made of half strawberry daiquiri and half pina coloda) my wife and I grabbed the nearest swim up bar we could find and were plugged in to watching the second half of game 5. With a few supporters hovered around the low-def T.V. people were half into the game and half into the rest of their Miami Vice.

As I looked around the supporters, all Philadelphia natives, I realized that the home field advantage travels well! Its not like you can put it in your suitcase or even get it through customs at most airports, but what brought together a bunch of strangers to a common area was not the drinks, although some may argue, but rather a love for sport and a love for their home team.

Vacation is a time when you are supposed to forget about the world behind for a few days and observe in awe the landscape and the beauty of your new location, saying to yourself “god, why don’t I take vacation more often”. The reality of the situation was that the people at that time and place, more than 5,000 miles away from Philly, still were supporting their home team, granted it was in a swim up bar, and not the sticky seats of the “Bank”. But this support was so fun to be a part of that it felt like a little piece of Philly was here with us all.

Feeling a part of a team and being able to cheer on their success is something that transcends locality and can be found all over the world. It’s this home field advantage that could easily be turned into “home field support group” anywhere in the world as long as you have a T.V. and a drink of choice. But more importantly, its about being around people and fans cheering on a common team.

So next time you are away on vacation, take a moment to admire the team support you see wherever you are…who knows, you may just hear the Philadelphia Eagles fight song somewhere along the way…E..A..G..L..E..S..EAGLES!
